We have been tasked with recreating the sound design for an established video that is not our own. Meaning we have to remove the original audio and recreate the audio When able we are to make the effects ourselves, i.e. dialogue. The video should ideally be between three and six minutes long.
In choosing my video this task, I have chosen the music video uploaded to the official ‘STONES THROW’ YouTube channel for the MF DOOM, real name Daniel Dumile, and Madlib, real name Otis Jackson Jr., song ‘ALL CAPS’ from the critically acclaimed album, ‘Madvillainy’, released in 2003. 'Madvilliany'is one of my personal favorite albums of all time, a consensus shared by many people within the hip-hop community.
This video depicts the Madvillian character, the central character as depicted in ‘Madvillainy’. It is presented in the style of a comic book in motion. This is a not-so-subtle reference to the album itself, as well as the MF DOOM discography, as Doom’s music includes many comic-book-like skits and references, sampling old comic-book cartoons in many of his albums. As an example: in his debut album under the ‘MF DOOM’ alias, 1999’s ‘Operation: Doomsday’, Dumile The MF DOOM character himself is meant to be a parallel of the Fantastic Four super-villain, Doctor Doom. In this video I plan to use many comic-book-esc sounds as to accompany the comic-book aesthetic of the video.
I have used an instrumental myself and a friend created using GarageBand in my own time. I used this beat as it is rather dynamic. Initially the instrumental was posed as an “MF DOOM type beat”, so I found it fitting to use as a base instrumental for my sound design recreation. The instrumental contains a consistent flute loop: reminiscent of Madlib’s production on the ‘Madvilliany’ album. I had the song ‘Meat Grinder’ in mind when creating this instrumental.
Our video opens with an establishing shot of an undisclosed government facility. There is a nice touch in the animation of this opening: we see the opening shot be drawn to life - evocative of the comic-book nature of this video. There aren’t any discernible diegetic sounds that I could think to accompany this opening shot. Our next shot following the opening shot depicts two, what appear to be, scientists working with unspecified chemicals. At the forefront of this image, to the right, we can visibly see a scientist pouring a green liquid from a test tube to another test tube.
This shot is in homage to the traditional comic book opening depicted in Marvel comics. With “Stones Throw Presents” in replacement of “Stan Lee Presents”, typically seen in the introductory page of Marvel Comics.
I have used a 2004 released, 12” vinyl, single from the Madvillian album, ‘ALL CAPS/CURLS’ to sample dialogue and sounds. In recording the audio from this vinyl record I have used a ‘Neostar Electronics’ turntable which contains a USB port in which I can use to transfer the sound produced by the vinyl record to .Mp3 format. I can then chop up sound samples and use them accordingly in the re-created sound design for the video.
