Culture in the Digital Age: AC4: Professional Practice:
When producing my. documentary - I have to treat the production with as much professionalism as possible - as one would within the media industry.
Equipment List:
- Canon A700:
I used this camera in shooting some shots for the introductory opening montage and some takes for the interview with Fortunato 35. This camera is incredibly useful as I can manually change the ISO ------
- Microphone
During the shooting of the interview with Tyler Clementson, Tom Daly, and Lewy Farhquar - they used a microphone.
Risk Assessment:
As part of common protocol when recording a piece of media; one must assess the risks at hand that could possibly arise during the production. Completing a risk assessment form helps us identify key risks and furthermore how to prevent these situations from occurring - or at least minimising the risk to a lesser extent that it would have been had the risks not been pondered upon.
Proposal:
a proposal is a letter that I would hypothetically send to my client, CMP Media, to receive feedback on my idea. I'm trying to sell my idea to the company by referencing the guidelines set by their brief.
Greetings, my name is Robert Andrews; I am a media studies student studying at Bede College. I have been tasked with making a documentary for CMP Media regarding the cultural impact of the digital age. I have chosen the idea of basing my documentary on the effects of the digital age on music culture. Due to music being so widely available and so vast in terms of genre - I think this idea will affect a large range of people as music is widely enjoyed by many people of different backgrounds. The provided brief states that the target demographic are teenagers, aged between 13 and 19. In an effort to make the project more appealing to this demographic - the documentary will focus around interviews with young people aged between 13 to 19 who are actively involved in the music industry. I think this will help further the message of the documentary in the minds of the target audience - as the information is being presented by people with who they can identify with.
Evaluation of the production process and final product:
As to develop the skills that I have gained during the process of producing the documentary - I am to reevaluate how I handled the production process: in terms of how regimented myself to the established shooting schedule that I set in 'AC2: Problem Solving' - as well as the storyboards I created prior to shooting.
"November 17th - Initial Storyboarding and script writing begins."
I started my production - past the planning stage - by creating storyboards of possible shot types that I would've liked to use in the shooting segment of my production. I created storyboards for the following shots: the record player that appears shortly after the opening montage.
I tried to replicate this storyboard as accurately as possible - and I think I have captured the general properties of the storyboard with the vinyl and the needle taking significance of the frame. However, when it came to shooting the shot - I decided to change the angle of the camera as to put more emphasis on the needle arm of the vinyl player. As the intention of this shot was to demonstrate the functionality of a vinyl player to the audience in a non-verbal sense - I thought shooting the shot from a lower angle would emphasise this more so than shooting the shot from above.
"2nd December - Initial shooting begins at home."
In my shooting schedule I stated that I would begin initial shooting in December - however I began shooting on the 27th November according to my diary entry - which means at this point of the production I was ahead of schedule. This is advantageous as it allows me more time to tweak and change anything that I did not like while not falling behind. In shooting at home - I used a Canon A700 camera to shoot shots of my vinyl player and physical music media collection. I only ended up using one of these shots - the shot of the vinyl player - as I lost most of the footage when I broke my laptop.
"27th December - Shooting Fortunato 35 Interview."
I shot this interview on the 27th of December as planned. I did not expect this date to change as all participants had agreed at a prior date to conduct the interview of 27th due to Lloyd and Luca's schedule.
"7th January - Prototype Fortunato interview created."
Unfortunately I could not create a prototype at this time, as I did not have access to Premiere Pro. I created the prototype Fortunato interview at a later date around the 28th January. This rendition of the interview did not have subtitles unlike the final product.
"3rd February - Leeds College of Music interview begins shooting. Editing begins and narration is recorded."
As with the Fortunato interview - this date was set at a prior date due to conflicting schedules and the fact that I did not shoot this interview myself.
8th February - Editing complete.
